“Have nothing in your houses that you do not know to be useful or believe to be beautiful.” -William Morris
Join us for a panel discussing the legacy of William Morris, the 19th century British designer regarded as one of the most influential figures of the Arts and Crafts movement. Founded in 1861, Morris & Co began as a collective of artists who valued simplicity, craftsmanship and sustainable design. Fiercely opposed to the mass-produced manufacturing of the Industrial Revolution, Morris began his home furnishings company with hand block-printed wallpapers, heavily inspired by the flora and fauna surrounding his home in the English countryside. Over the next 150 years, Morris & Co has stayed true to the founder’s core values of artisanal design and sustainable practices, and has garnered a reputation as a prolific British heritage brand.
Hosted by Michael Parry from Style Library (the official home of six iconic British brands: Morris & Co, Sanderson, Zoffany, Harlequin, Scion and Anthology), we will discuss how Morris’s beliefs and aesthetics are of growing importance to the current design community. A panel of designers will also share how Morris & Co has kept his legacy alive through the continuous reinvention of pattern and application, with Style Library’s in-house wallpaper and fabric designs, to the recent fashion collaboration with H&M, and this spring through the launch of the Morris & Co furniture, lighting, and wall décor collection from Selamat.
Panel participants include Shannon Davis, Selamat Designs' co-owner and creative director; Helen Webster, Style Library licensing director; and Danielle Fennoy, interior designer and founder of NY-based design firm Revamp; with Michael Parry, Style Library brand ambassador, as moderator.
Join interior design and business expert Gail Doby, ASID, CVO & Co-Founder of Gail Doby Coaching & Consulting, as she provides research from a host of sources illustrating and explaining the current state of the design industry; beyond where we have been and where we are, what are the markers pointing to the future; ways design firms can advantage themselves by adjusting their vision forward with smart forecasting; a futurist’s look with the reality check of pragmatic business planning and much more.
